Why I’ll Be Ditching Some Cordless Rechargeables

I thought I was being clever. Lighter, cordless, rechargeable, perfect for travel, right? In practice, these gadgets took up space, added weight, and left me more frustrated than free.

The straightener

💼Why I packed it: No cord, no voltage worries, sounded like freedom.

🪫Reality: It added 8 ounces to my personal item. Eight ounces doesn’t sound like much—until you’ve been traveling 15 hours and hauling your bag across Munich airport.

🚩Lesson: Sometimes weight matters more than sleek.

The fan

💼Why I packed it: Comfort on hot nights, rechargeable, small.

🪫Reality: Because lithium batteries aren’t allowed in checked bags, it had to live in my personal item—and added 9 more ounces. Now we’re over a pound, and I felt every bit of it after hours of travel.

🛑Lesson: Not worth the weight.

The book light

💼Why I packed it: So I could journal at night; rechargeable; tiny.

🔋Reality: A star—under an ounce, takes no space, and I used it several times.

✅Lesson: Worth the weight.

Headphones (…three pairs!)

Why I packed them:
🎧 Over-ear ANC for the plane (with a cord for seatback screens).
🎧 Regular earbuds for easy listening and one-ear awareness.
🎧 Sleep headband headphones I use with meditations (about 3 oz).

🪫Reality: ANC on the plane was amazing—and I’ll always have ANC now—but the over-ears alone were nearly 8 oz. Earbuds were about 2.1 oz, the headband about 3 oz. Altogether, I was carrying roughly 11 oz of headphones—almost three-quarters of a pound. That put me close to 2 lbs of lithium-powered devices.

🚩Lesson: Not worth the weight.

Reliability over novelty

Travel needs gear that fits your body and your needs. A cord isn’t the enemy.

What I’ll use next time

✅ A dual-voltage plug-in straightener.
✅My lightweight USB fan, plus a USB extension cord. My EU adapter has USB ports, but outlets aren’t always near the bed.
✅One pair of do-it-all earbuds 🙌🏻—ANC and sleep-friendly.

Simple choices that lift frustration—not just the scale.

Closing reflection

Packing smarter isn’t about the trendiest gadgets; it’s about choosing tools that let you stay present. Next time, I’m traveling lighter—in pounds and in peace of mind. The heavier rechargeables? They’re staying home.
